Internal comms

You can win the firefight and still lose the case

Black Wire’s Director’s Cut. Why the scoreboard stopped being a score and became an eight-count indictment, how the Wire Bench lets you fabricate evidence without knowing it, and why a solver proves every operation winnable on every build.

One of your sources works for someone else

The Penumbra Directive. Why we compromise your intelligence from day one with a different mole every run, and how a causality timeline lets you trace any crisis back to the decision that caused it.

The day the printer port learned to sing

Devlog v0.51. Covox Speech Thing and Disney Sound Source in Castalia 92: digital audio over the parallel port, paced by the PIT, and why we never probe for them.

We rebuilt an entire kernel to change three lines

The stock FreeDOS KERNEL.SYS prints its banner from a packed image whose strings cannot be edited. For a 386 to boot saying CASTALIA DOS — and nothing else — we had to recompile the kernel from source.

Four kilobytes of stack, and why we still do not copy folders

AmigaOS gives each process ~4 KB of stack, and copying a folder tree is recursive by nature. Why ChumOS copies single files with an 8 KB buffer and leaves recursive copy unimplemented, instead of pretending it works.

A screenshot pipeline for a machine that cannot take screenshots

A real-mode 386 has no screenshot button. How CI boots the compiled .EXE in DOSBox over Xvfb and grabs the screen with ImageMagick: the images come from the binary that ships, not from a reimplementation.

0% idle CPU: the desktop that sleeps in one Wait()

Nothing in ChumOS polls. Every event arrives as a signal into a single Wait(), and the whole screen composes and blits in one beam-synced operation. Here is how.

Compose in 32 bits, present in 8: the CastaliaOS renderer

The entire CastaliaOS 98 PE interface composes into a 32-bit XRGB back buffer and presents to 8- or 16-bit hardware as dirty rectangles. No dithering, no palette search, no alpha.
